Planting flowers is an excellent way to support bees and other pollinators. Here are some of the best flowers to plant for bees:
- Lavender – Bees are attracted to the fragrant scent of lavender, and it blooms in the summer when bees are most active.
- Sunflowers – These cheerful flowers are a favorite of bees, and they produce lots of nectar and pollen.
- Marigolds – Marigolds are easy to grow and bloom all summer long. Bees are attracted to their bright colors and sweet nectar.
- Cosmos – These pretty flowers come in a variety of colors and are easy to grow from seed. Bees love their open, daisy-like blooms.
- Coneflowers – Coneflowers, also known as Echinacea, have large, showy flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. They bloom from mid-summer to fall.
- Borage – Borage is an annual herb with blue, star-shaped flowers that are very attractive to bees. It’s also edible and has a cucumber-like flavor.
- Wildflowers – Planting a mix of native wildflowers is a great way to support a variety of pollinators, including bees. Look for wildflower mixes that include flowers like black-eyed Susan, milkweed, and goldenrod.
When planting flowers for bees, it’s important to choose varieties that have single or semi-double flowers, as these provide more nectar and pollen than double flowers. It’s also a good idea to plant flowers in clusters, as this makes them easier for bees to find and collect nectar from.
