The plan aims to improve the quality of homes available in the&nbsp;private rental market, and will give tenants confidence that houses and flats in a designated area will be healthy and safe to live in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to get a permit:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applications can be made through Birmingham City Council&#8217;s website. To apply for a selective license, you will need the following items:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Name and contact details of anyone with an interest in the property \u2013 this could include the owner, freeholder or mortgage company<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The date of birth of the person who will be the licence holder<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Measurements of all the rooms in square metres along with their position in the property \u2013 for example, ground floor left, first floor front right<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The current electricity installation inspection and test certificate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The most recent gas safety certificate (if applicable)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A debit or credit card to pay the licence fee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much will it cost?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each licence will cost \u00a3700 per property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What happens when a property lacks a license?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your property does not have a license, Landlords could be subject to a range of enforcement actions including court action which may result in<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>an unlimited financial penalty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>having to surrender&nbsp;the unlicensed property to Birmingham City Council.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Are there exemptions?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You won\u2019t need a selective licence if your property is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>licensed as an HMO<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>managed directly by an educational establishment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>let by a registered social landlord such as a housing association<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where Selective Licensing will be implemented:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A selective licensing program covering 25 of Birmingham&#8217;s 69 wards was approved by the Department of Levelling Up, Housing, and Communities. The wards are listed below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td>Acocks Green<\/td><td>Alum Rock<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Aston<\/td><td>Balsall Heath<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Birchfield<\/td><td>Bordesley Green<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Bordesley &amp; Highgate<\/td><td>Bournebrook &amp; Selly Park<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Edgbaston<\/td><td>Gravelly Hill<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Handsworth<\/td><td>Heartlands<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Ladywood<\/td><td>Lozells<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>North Edgbaston<\/td><td>Small Heath<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Soho &amp; Jewellery Quarter<\/td><td>South Yardley<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Sparkbrook &amp; Balsall Heath<\/td><td>Sparkhill<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Stockland Green<\/td><td>Tyseley &amp; Hay Mills<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Ward End<\/td><td>West Holyhead<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Yardley &amp; West Stechford<\/td><td><\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>BCC will start to enforce the new scheme from 4 September 2023.
