We are halfway through the year already (where have the last six months gone?) and there are plenty of new interior design trends of the last six months that warrant a closer look. With the focus on sustainability and the discussion on eco-friendly living becoming more and more a part of our daily lives, it is interesting to see that this trend shows itself in our homes as well. Continue reading to see a shortlist of the top five interior design trends for 2019 that will continue on into 2020.

  1. Scandinavian living

Although this is not a new trend, the Scandi interior design inspiration is everywhere still. While the minimalism that is such a huge part of the style is on its way out, Scandinavian living has adapted to stay up to date with our changing tastes. Here to stay, Scandi style features soft patterns and textured fabrics that create an effortlessly stylish interior décor. Slow living is the essence of the updated Scandi style, and the natural raw materials that we see in this style work together harmoniously with the rough textures and subtle colours. The various textures add depth to the space and come together to form a welcoming and cosy home that is ideal for unwinding after a busy day.

  1. Bold & Retro

Bold colours like mustard and midnight blue have made a comeback, not only in beautiful upholstered furniture, but also in wallpapers, paints and decorative materials. Stunning 50s signature furniture styles make a beautiful centre piece in a room, especially paired with the bold jewel colours that complement this trend. Geometric prints have also made a comeback, and you can find them on everything from rugs to wall art and wallpaper. Opt for bold colours and scalloped furniture (or wallpaper design!) in fabrics such as velvet or dark woods.

  1. Sustainability

The public is becoming more and more conscious of the need to help the planet, and this is reflected in our homes. Sustainability is one of the biggest interior design trends to emerge this year, with brands offering sustainable products and materials. Swapping some of your day to day products for a more sustainable version or investing in some quality products made of sustainable materials is a great way to get started with this. Think for example of furniture made from local materials that have been sustainably sourced or even products made from recycled materials, such as rugs made from plastic bottles or even kitchens made from recycled wood. Imperfect finishes are perfect in this trend that makes natural materials look effortlessly stylish.

  1. Urban jungle botanicals

Soft pastel pinks and blues are offset by leafy greens and mustard yellows in this relaxed trend. Whether you prefer your plants real, fake, or on a throw pillow, a bold botanical theme will brighten up any room and make the space feel like new. Natural materials and patterned leaves pair beautifully with the soft colour scheme of this trend and bring a slice of nature into your home. Choose natural, organic materials such as wood and stone and finish the look with hand crafter decorative items and botanical prints.

  1. Maximalism

If adding a pop of colour in a bold retro colour isn’t enough for you, the maximalism style might be more up your street. Mix and match various patterns and bold colours with mismatched pieces of furniture for an outspoken look that you are sure not to get bored of anytime soon! The polar opposite of the minimalistic and simplistic Scandinavian interior design style, this flamboyant trend is hard to get right but oh so fun and rewarding. Combine wild patterns with curved velvet upholstery for a luxurious and glamourous look.

If you are revamping your home and are looking to refresh some of your living spaces, don’t forget to include Pantone’s colour of the year 2019: Living Coral. This vibrant and daring colour fits in beautifully with all of the above trends.
