A recent report by property co-ownership platform MYNE, Rethinking the Dream: The Future of Holiday Home Ownership, reveals that nearly two in five Brits search for a holiday home online every single day, despite concerns over affordability and ongoing maintenance.
The UK: Still the First Choice for Holiday Homes
When asked where they’d most like to buy, more than half (53%) of prospective buyers placed the UK at the top of their list – ahead of Spain (22%), Italy (15%), Greece (14%) and the USA (13%). For those seeking luxury property investments, the UK continues to be seen as a safe, desirable option with strong long-term value.
From coastal retreats with sea views to countryside estates, demand for exclusive homes in prime UK locations shows no sign of slowing down.
A Nation Obsessed with Property
According to MYNE’s research:
- 87% of respondents think about their dream home every day
- 88% admit it distracts them from work
- On average, people spend four hours each week browsing property listings both at home and abroad
- Estate agents’ websites remain the most popular source of inspiration, alongside TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook
- It seems the UK’s passion for property is stronger than ever, with many even admitting to browsing estate agents’ windows while on holiday to check what’s available locally.
Barriers to Ownership
Despite the desire, nearly a third (27%) don’t believe they’ll ever be able to afford a holiday home. Concerns about upfront costs, taxes, maintenance, and bureaucracy remain the biggest challenges. Only 10% consider holiday homeownership “easy”.
